Tea bowls
The clay from which I make the tea bowls (matcha bowls) is mainly sourced from Hagi, the important pottery town in the Japanese prefecture of Yamaguchi. It is a light and very fine porcelain-like clay that has been extracted from the clay pits around Hagi since 1717. The clay variety called daidō tsuchi is mixed with the two varieties mitake-tsuchi and mishima-tsuchi. In this way, the Hagi shade achieves its special colour and structure variance and takes on a cream-coloured to slightly reddish colouring after the reducing firing.
As a glaze for the tea bowls, I almost exclusively use ash glazes.
The result is tea bowls with beautiful crackle patterns (嵌入, kannyū), which were created during firing due to the tension differences between glaze and shards. With the use of the bowl for tea or coffee preparation, the tea bowl "matures". Since tannin components become fixed in the crackle pattern through use, this gradually becomes even more apparent.
The tea bowls have a capacity of approx. 350 ml. The diameter of the bowls is on average 12 cm, the height 8 to 9 cm.
The tea bowls (matcha bowls) shown below are all available and can be purchased at a price of € 50.00 per bowl. Shipping cost within Europe is € 10,00. If you are not satisfied, a return is possible within 14 days. However, the costs for the return must then be paid by the sender.
