Tee Bowls

The clay from which I make the tea bowls (matcha bowls) I get mainly from Hagi, the important pottery town in the Japanese prefecture of Yamaguchi. It is a light and very fine porcelain like clay that has been extracted from the clay pits around Hagi since 1717. The type of clay called daidō tsuchi is mixed with the two varieties mitake-tsuchi and mishima-tsuchi. This is how the Hagi clay achieves its special colour and structure variance and takes on a cream-coloured to slightly reddish colour after the reducting firing.

As a glaze for the tea bowls, I almost exclusively use ash glazes. The result is tea bowls with beautiful craquelée patterns (嵌入, kannyū), which were created during firing due to the tension differences between glaze and shards. With the use of the bowl for tea or coffee preparation, the tea bowl "matures". Since tannins settle in the craquelée pattern through use, this gradually becomes even more pronounced.

The tea bowls have a capacity of approx. 350 ml. The diameter of the bowls is on average 12 cm, the height is 8 to 9 cm.
